Description	Shaving case or kit of David L. Swain, president of UNC and former governor of North Carolina, presented to him by the senior class of 1868. Items include: 1) Black shaving case with hinged cover and copper trimming, compartmentalized inside with removable mirror, key, and miscellaneous items. The case has two plates attached. A plate on the lid reads, "PRESENTED to hon. D.L. Swain L.L.D. BY THE SENIOR CLASS... JUNE 1868." The plate on back reads, "LOANED TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF U. OF N.C. BY NEEDHAM TYNDALE COBB, JR.... " Dimensions of case: 24.8 x 17.9 x 10.5 cm. 2) Razor, brown gutta-percha handle with blade. Inscriptions on blade read "TRADE TRUE EDGE MARK" "S.B. KAHNWEILER & CO., NEW YORK, U.S.A." "248." Dimensions of razor: handle 14.4 cm long, blade 14.3 cm long, folded length 16.3 cm. 3) Razor, ivory handle with blade. Handle inscription reads "C.C.B.", "X" "35" and "1." Blade inscription reads "SILVERSTEEL." Dimensions: handle 13.8 cm long, blade 13.2 cm long, folded length 15.3 cm. 4) Razor, ivory handle with blade. Handle inscription reads "C.C.B." and "9." Blade inscription reads "SILVERSTEEL." Dimensions: handle 14 cm long, blade 13.5 cm long, folded length 15.5 cm. 5) Jar, glass with wide mouth and silver cap. Jar has teaspoon and tablespoon markers up to 2 tablespoons/8 teaspoons. The lid is engraved with a frame and floral pattern. Dimensions: 3.2 cm diam. base, 4.5 cm diam at lip. 6) & 7) Jars, glass with narrow necks and threaded silver caps. Shoulders of jar patterned with 10 oval planes indented into glass, caps engraved with frame and floral patterns. Dimensions: 4.6 cm diam base, 1.7 cm diam neck, 3 cm diam cap. 8) Jar, glass with wide mouth, silver cap engraved with frame and floral pattern. Dimensions: 4.6 cm diam.

Relevance	David L. Swain
Notes	David Lowry Swain (1801-1868) served as the 26th Governor of North Carolina from 1832 to 1835, during which time he was highly popular. Following his last term, Swain went on to serve as UNC president for the remainder of his life, filling the longest term of any University president.
