Notes	Once an independent organization, the Dialectic Society is now part of UNC’s Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies (Di-Phi). Founded as the Debating Society in 1795, the Dialectic Society comprises part of the oldest student organization at the University of North Carolina. The society is noted for having purchased a small personal library, which served both students and faculty until the first university library was established. The Dialectic Society also furnished all the books for the university library at the time of its founding. In 1796, the Debating Society took on its Greek name, the Dialectic Society (occasionally shortened to the Di Society). Dialectic graduates received a second diploma from the society, which was decorated with a light blue ribbon, the inspiration for UNC’s school colors. Along with the Philanthropic Society (Phi Society) the collective Di-Phi organization is responsible for founding the General Alumni Association, the Yackety-Yack (yearbook), the University Magazine, the Honor System, and academic schools like the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, and Medicine.
