Page 2 Tar Heel Nurse May-June 1983 Message from the President Barbara Jo McGrath As members of the North Carolina Nurses Association, you may or may not know that NCNA has been involved in a coalition with other southeastern state associations. The executive directors of 12 nurses associations have been meeting on a regular basis for a number of years. Their meetings have served the purpose of information sharing and as a support group. After the ANA Constituent Forum meeting this year in February, the southeastern nurses' associations decided to meet and have the meeting include both the president and the executive director of each association. The first meeting was held in Atlanta in April. I am very excited about these meetings. I believe that through such a coalition many of our ideas and concerns can be better understood at a national level. There is also a great deal that we can learn from each other. At the April meeting the group discussed such things as nominations for national offices and how we can promote candidates from the southeast; what we must know about setting national dues so that we can intelligently discuss this on the floor of the House of Delegates; what we believe should be included in the basic package of services ANA will provide to the states after July 1984; and other things related to specific programs within states. The group came up with some recommendations to be presented to the executive committee of the Constituent Forum for possible discussion at the August meeting. The southeastern presidents and executive directors will meet again in August. I find this to be a very good support group and I believe that, through such a coalition, the southeast can become a major force in national decision-making. I find this very exciting. UNC-Wilmington starts BSN program The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has been authorized to establish a baccalaureate degree program in nursing. The University received a $200,000 gift from Babies Hospital Foundation, Inc., of Wilmington to provide for the transition from the existing associate degree program to the four-year program. Pending approval of the Board of Nursing, the University plans to admit students to the junior year nursing major in the fall of 1985, with the last class admitted to the two-year program in the fall of 1984. Marlene M. Rosenkoetter, R.N., Ph.D., and Joan Marie Ketchur, R.N. {Ed.D. candidate) are responsible for the development of the new program. ANA seeking baDot suggestions The ANA Nominating Committee is seeking names of suggested nominees from SNA and ANA structural units for the 1984 ANA ballot. Any NCNA member interested in running for ANA office and who believes he/she is qualified is encouraged to notify NCNA to request a consent-to-serve form. The following national offices are to be filled in 1984: President First Vice-president Treasurer Board of Directors (elect 5) Cabinet on Nursing Education (elect2) Cabinet on Nursing Practice (elect 2) Cabinet on Nursing Research (elect 2) Cabinet on Nursing Services (elect 2) Cabinet on Economic and General Welfare (elect 2) Cabinet on Human Rights (elect 2) ANA Nominating Com.mittee (elect?). Deadline for SNAs to submit suggestions to the ANA Nominating Committee is July 1, 1983. NCANS elects new leaders Daryl Beth Goldston, nursing student at UNC-Greensboro, is the new president of the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students. In competition at the NCANS convention earlier this year. Brenda Rourke. nursing student at UNC-CH, was selected as Student Nurse of the Year and awarded a $1,000 scholarship. District Eleven celebrated the "Year of the Nursing Student" project with a banquet in April. Shown here are district officers (seated, left to right) Saddle Gillespie, publicity chairman; Jean Pochert, membership chairman; Gwen Waddell, president; Joan Martin-Jones, past president.
