Wage War on Pneumonia.—Vigorous measures to check the epidemic of l)neumonia will promptly be taken by tlie health authorities as a result of a meeting- held January 12 by Dr. Thomas Darlington, the new commissioner, and the members of the advisory board of the department. In the last five weeks ot 1903 there were 889 deaths in Manhattan alone from this cause, as against 5S6 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Several methods of action were chosen as a beginning of the work. These include the cleaning of all public buildings, including school houses, a rigid enforcement of the law lequiring the cleaning of sidewalks from snow and slush, insisting on the proper heating and ventilation of street cars, surface and elevated, and the enforcement of the prohibition against ex-jiectoration on the sidewalks, or anywhere else where infection may be caused.
