Crothers of Hartford, Conn., is the secretary. Editorial Notes. Dr. Geo. F. Shrady, for thirty-eight years editor of the Medical Resord, has retired from editorial work. Dr. Shrady was one of the foremost editors in medical journalism, and has probably been in the harness longer than any other American writer. His work has always been characterized by a high order of merit, and a demand for everything that tended for the upbuilding of the profession. The American Association for the study of Inebriety and the Medical Temperance Association have united tc form the American Medical Society for the Study of Alcohol and other Narcotics. The objects of the new organization are: (i) to encourage and promote exact scientific studies of alcohol in health and disease, (2) to secure more accurate investigations of disease following or associated with alcohol and narcotics, (3) to correct tlie empirical areatment of these diseases, and secure legislation against nostrums claiming to cure them ; (4) to encourage special legislation for the cure, control and medical treatment of s]Mrit and drug-takers. As these problems are assuming large proportions and the nublic is looking to the jjrofession for aid and advice—medical men are invited to use the society for a concentrated effort to clear away the ])resent confusion and aid in creating a healthy moral senti- The August issue of the Bulletin of the North Carolina Board of Health is devoted to the prophylaxis and some advise on treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. It is well written, concise, direct, and thoroughly up to date, without any unnecessary verbage. The article is also published in pamphlet form for gratuitious distribution. Physicians can help greatly in this crusade againstj consumption by placing this pamphlet in the hands of their patients, and especially of those with tubercular tenden^ cies, and in families where it already exists. Dr. R. H. Lewis, secretary of the Board at Raleigh, will cheerfully supply copies where needed. Tramps as disseminators of contagi-j ous diseases have not received the con-' sideration that the subject would justify. Their filthiness offers a rich field* for the propagation of bacterial organi-. zations and their paripatetic nature makes them carriers of contagion in dangerous ddgree. Theff loathsomeness prevents personal contact to an\^'j considerable extent, but their herding together for sleeping in out-houses,-^ I % barns, etc., and their frequent stay inj | iailp and !the town calaboose for a night's lodging all add to the risk ot^ leaving some contagious disease or] ]^arasites in their wake.
