CHARLOTTE MEDICAL JOURNAL. 49 book is the best and most effectual manner of preparing healthy and nutritious food. It is therefore suited to the needs of the poor as well as the rich. It will be of benefit to chefs, cooks, stewards, caterers, private families, confectioners, ice cream makers, restau- J ' rant keepers, hotel proprietors, managers of dormitories, etc., etc. The edition contains innumerable recipes, which are very simple and explained in a comprehensive manner, so as to meet the wants of all. It suggests, also, many useful hints to those about entering the profession. The book is illustrated and contains instructions how to prepare, garnish and serve according to the traditional rules now followed by the principal chefs of France and the United States. One special feature of the work is the great variety of bills of fare given for each month of the year and for all occasions. This is among the handsomest and most highly-valued book that adorns our library. It is a beautiful book. A thorough, practical index, occupying sixty-four pages, concludes the volume. Public Health Papers and Reports—Volume XVIII, presented at the twentieth annual meeting of the American Public Health Association, held in the City of Mexico, November 29th to December 2d, 1892, with an Abstract of the Records of Proceedings. It contains 513 large pages, well printed, bound in cloth, and presents a handsome appearance. The volume contains fifty-six articles. Many of them are very valuable on account of the statistics and original research contained in them. The next meeting of the Association will be held at Montreal, Canada, September 28th, 1894. The Care and Feeding of Children, by h. Fmmitt Holt, M. D., Professor of Diseases of Children in the New York Polyclinic, Attending Physician to the Babies Hospital and the Nursery, and Child's Hospital, New York. New York: D. Apple-ton & Co., 1894. One can see at a glance the great utility and need for such a book as this one. No subject is of more importance, or more difficult to properly attend to, than the feeding and care of young children. This little book is arranged in the form of a catechism —questions and answers—and by this means it makes it more impressive. Every thing in the world that pertains to babies and young children is treated in this book. To mothers and nurses its value cannot be estimated. It contains about 75 pages, and is a
