Abstract | Color print in three sheets with appendix. This map was prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering, in cooperation with the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. It portrays Mitchell County and shows the area and distribution of soil types in the county. Roads, railroads, railroad tunnels, cities and towns, churches, schools, gaging stations, and other components of the built environment are also shown. Shows labeled mountains, peaks, gaps, and waterfalls; Pisgah National Forest, Wolfden Mine, Spread Eagle Mine, Pink Mine, Wiseman Mine, Hootowl Mine, Emerald Mine, Buchanan Mine, Spruce Pine Reservoir, lumber roads, Appalachian Trail, and Prison Camp near Spruce Pine. Legends reporting the colors used to indicate the various types of soil and the symbols used to note churches, schools, etc., are found on the right side of sheet three. An index map appears as an inset on each sheet. A summary of the important characteristics of the soils in the county appears as an appendix. |
