Abstract | Color print in four sheets with an appendix. This map was prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station and the Tennessee Valley Authority. It portrays Haywood County and shows the area and distribution of soil types in the county. Shows labeled mountain peaks, ridges, and gaps; waterfalls; Pisgah National Forest, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Big Ridge Mine, Waynesville Reservoir, Canton Reservoir, Morrison Fish Hatchery, Camp Junaluska, Camp Skyland, Daniel Boone Camp, Camp Hope, Appalachian Trail, power plant (near Waterville), and Prison Camp near Waynesville. Roads, railroads, cities and towns, churches, schools, power transmission lines, hydroelectric tunnel, houses, gaging stations, and other components of the built environment are also shown. Legends reporting the colors used to indicate the various types of soil and the symbols used to note churches, schools, etc., are found in the lower left of sheet one. An index map appears as an inset on each sheet. A summary of the important characteristics of the soils in the county appears as an appendix. |
