Abstract | Color print in 7 sheets with an appendix. This map was prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, in cooperation with the N.C. Agricultural Experiment Station and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The survey was performed by E. F. Goldston of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Glenn R. Robinson and W. J. Leighty of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The map portrays Avery County and shows the area and distribution of soil types in the county, as well as labeled mountains, mountain ridges, and mountain gaps. Roads, cities and towns, churches, schools, and other components of the built environment are also shown. Shows power transmission lines, Cranberry Iron Mine, Beech Haven Camp, Lees McRae Junior College, Grandfather Orphanage, part of Pisgah National Forest, Daniel Boone Wildlife Management Area, Meadow Mine, Charlie Ridge Mine, Garnett Mine, Wiseman Dam, Waterhole Mine, Patrick Mine, and Clay Plant. Relief is depicted by contours. The map is printed in six sheets, divided by quadrangle. Diagram showing arrangement of sheets in bottom center margin of each page. A legend sheet reports the colors used to indicate the various types of soil and the symbols used to note churches, schools, etc. A summary of the important characteristics of the soil of the county appears as an appendix. |
