Title | N.C. Geological Survey. Sketch of N.C.R.R. from a tracing of Mr. Cooks. |
Date Published | circa 1880 |
Date Depicted | circa 1880 |
Creator - Individual | Cain, Wm. (William), 1847-1930. |
Caption | Below title: "Remark - The green line is Cain's reduction from the 5 books of maps in the N.C.R.R. Office & was carefully made and tested; but although it fits known distances from Charlotte to Greensboro and Raleigh to Goldsboro, yet it is 2 1/2 miles short from Raleigh to Greensboro. The only possible explanation is that meridians must have been improperly placed on original maps (as was forced on two [illegible] & corrected) besides the error from plotting short distances shrinkage of paper not allowed for." |
Abstract | Color manuscript. This map portrays the route of the railroad from Goldsboro to Charlotte and was probably prepared during the time from 1868 to 1874 and from 1880 to 1882 that Cain was employed as an engineer and surveyor for various railroads in North and South Carolina. It also shows county boundaries, towns along the route, rivers and streams over which the railroad crossed, and other landmarks, such as a poor house near Concord and a hotel in Goldsboro. The map is accompanied by a separate sheet giving the distances between stations and other points on the railroad. |
Historical Note | This map is a reduction by William Cain (1847-1930), professor of engineering and mathematics at the University of North Carolina. |
Bibliographic Note | The title states that the reduction was from a "tracing of Mr. Cooks", but an annotation below the title reports that the route of the railroad shown in green is a reduction by Cain from the books of maps in the North Carolina Railroad Office. This map was formerly classified as M.C. 125-A. |
