Abstract | This map of North and South Carolina is composed of plates 70 and 71 from the 1886 edition of The National Atlas, Containing Elaborate Topographical Maps of the United States and the Dominion of Canada published in Philadelphia by O. W. Gray & Son. A table of Explanations in the lower left hand corner explains the symbols used to indicate places with a population over 50,000, places with a population over 10,000, state capitals, county towns, standard gauge railroads, narrow gauge railroads, proposed railroads, railroads under construction, and canals. Relief shown by hachures, depths shown by soundings. "Charleston Harbor and its Approaches" is shown in an inset in the lower right hand corner. The Cherokee Nation is shown in the far western part of the state. Longitude is calculated both from Greenwich and Washington. An index of place names is found on the reverse. |
Bibliographic Note | North Carolina is depicted at a situation date of 1883 reflecting the creation of Durham and Vance counties in 1881 and the completion of the Western North Carolina Railroad to Webster in 1883. |
