Abstract | Bound volume of hand colored manuscript maps. This is one of a series of five volumes containing the plats of surveys made by Charles R. Barney and Upton Bruce Gwynn under the direction of Walter Gwynn (1802-1882), chief engineer of the North Carolina Railroad Company. Surveying began on August 21, 1850 and a completed report was presented by Walter Gwynn to the stockholders of the railroad in May 1851. The plat maps in this volume show the right of way to be secured from property owners in Johnston and Wake counties and portray the route of the railroad westward in a contiguous line beginning with map number one. The individual manuscript maps are drawn to a scale of one inch to 100 feet and have been hand colored in ink and watercolor. Orientation of the maps varies from plat to plat. |
