Historical Notes | The most stark signature on this worn, stitched specimen is that of John Starkey of Onslow County (top right). During much of the colonial period, North Carolina's fiscal affairs were managed by two public treasurers, one for the colony's Northern District, another for its Southern District. Starkey served in the latter capacity from 1750-1765. |
