Historical Notes | Bechtler coins were highly prized at a time when many citizens viewed paper currencies as being unreliable in value. Seeking to capitalize on the public’s trust in Bechtler gold, an enterprising counterfeiter made this brass duplicate of one type of the family’s quarter-eagles. Originally, he coated or "dusted" this fake with a very thin layer of gold, giving it a very authentic appearance. Within a short time, however, after being exchanged in several transactions, this counterfeit’s gold veneer began to wear away, revealing its base metal and exposing it as a fake. Traces of that veneer are still quite visible on both the obverse and reverse of this specimen. |
