Historical Notes | Certainly, the most valuable artifacts that survive from North Carolina’s gold-rush era are the coins that the Bechtler family minted in Rutherford County from 1831 into the early 1850s. The Bechtlers struck three denominations of gold coins: a dollar, “quarter-eagle” ($2.50), and “half-eagle” ($5.00). The fractional references to an eagle corresponded to a popular ten-dollar gold coin that the United States Mint had produced in Philadelphia since 1795. That large federal gold piece featured an eagle on its reverse, so citizens commonly referred it as an “eagle.” Hence, any coin worth one-quarter or one-half of that coin would be called a quarter-eagle or half-eagle. |
