Historical Notes | This is another very early product of the Bechtler Mint. Analysis of this coin’s die characteristics indicate that it is was struck in July 1831, at the time when Christopher, Sr., first added the service of “stamping coins” to his jewelry and watchmaking business in Rutherford County, N.C. Later, despite isolated attempts by some to counterfeit Bechtler pieces and repeated charges by federal authorities that the genuine articles did not meet expressed weight and purity standards, Bechtler dollars, quarter-eagles, and half-eagles remained among the most trusted currencies in the region for decades. In fact, Bechtler coins would occasionally still be found in circulation in western North Carolina in the early 1900s.. |
