Historical Notes | The Bechtler family earned money in their minting operation by charging customers varying percentages for the labor involved in assaying their gold, refining or “fluxing” it, and then actually “stamping” the gold into finished coins. According to the Bechtlers’ advertisements in newspapers from the period, the Rutherford County minters would charge their customers four dollars for every one hundred dollars worth of coins they produced with the raw gold dust, ore, or nuggets that people brought to their business. |
