Historical Notes | The first proven discovery of gold in the United States occurred in North Carolina over thirty years before the Bechtlers minted this particular coin. In 1799, a twelve-year-old boy named Conrad Reed discovered a pretty "shiny rock" lying in a creek on his father's farm in Cabarrus County. That rock was actually a seventeen-pound gold nugget, one described to be about the size of a "flatiron." Unaware of the geological curiosity's true composition and value, the Reed family for several years used the valuable rock as a doorstop in their cabin and reportedly sold it later for the ridiculously small sum of $3.50. |
