Historical Notes | In taking into account the three denominations of coins that the Bechtlers produced, along with their respective die combinations, the number of known variants of Bechtler gold pieces is less than forty. The Herman W. Bernard Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is among the finest collections of Bechtler pieces ever assembled by a private collector. There are no duplicates in the Bernard Collection. It contains twenty-four varieties and consists of five gold dollars, seven quarter-eagles ($2.50), and twelve half-eagles ($5.00). Mr. Bernard (1918-1999) of High Point, N.C., generously donated his collection to the university in December 1979. |
