Historical Notes | Despite the abundance of gold found in western North Carolina during the 1820s, there was in the region at that time a serious lack of money in circulation, especially coinage. It was that shortage of coinage or “specie” that Christopher Bechtler, Sr., helped to ease when he began producing gold dollars, quarter-eagles ($2.50), and half-eagles ($5.00) in the 1830s. Local prospectors and miners especially welcomed the arrival of the new coins, for those laborers generally distrusted paper money and were often unwilling to accept it or exchange it for the highly prized gold dust, ore, nuggets they had worked so hard to find and accumulate. |
