Description | Bechtler gold quarter-eagle ($2.50), 1831-1832 |
Historical Notes | This quarter-eagle was among the first coins issued by Christopher Bechtler, Sr., after he began his minting operation in Rutherford County, N.C., in the summer of 1831. This particular specimen was struck later that same year or in the early months of 1832. Coins of this variety are distinguished by the legend “C. BECHTLER ASSA[Y]ER” on their obverse. The metal craftsman included the term assayer on his early coins to assure the public of his coins’ integrity and to promote the Bechtlers’ newly established services in analyzing gold ores, refining the precious metal, and “stamping” it into coinage. |
