Historical Notes | To produce their coinage, the Bechtlers used a hand-operated press that held two hardened metal stamps known as dies. One die was engraved with a coin’s obverse (front) design; the other die, with the reverse design. When a coin was ready to be struck, one of the Bechtler craftsmen would place a plain circular piece of gold, a “planchet,” on top of the bottom “anvil die” (also called the trussel). He would then pull the long-armed lever on the shop’s press. That action lowered the upper “hammer die” (or pile) and compressed the gold planchet between both dies, thereby transferring the dies’ inscriptions and designs onto what became a coin. |
