Historical Notes | This coin and others produced by the Bechtlers are vivid reminders that North Carolina’s gold history began a half century before the more famous California gold rush. In the years after gold was discovered on the Reed family’s farm in Cabarrus County in 1799, more and more deposits of the precious metal were found. By 1824, random surface diggings on the Reed property had uncovered an estimated $100,000 in gold. Other neighboring farmers made their own strikes, and during the 1820s rough-and-tumble mining towns began to spring up elsewhere, in Mecklenburg, Rowan, and adjacent counties. By 1830 no fewer than fifty-six gold mines were operating in North Carolina's western piedmont. |
