Historical Notes | The “A” before “BECHTLER” on this specimen’s obverse is an abbreviation for Augustus, the son of Christopher, Sr. Augustus became master of the family’s mint when his father died in 1842. Note, too, the “21 carats” included on this coin’s reverse. That part of the inscription is a measure of the gold’s purity in the coin. Pure gold, which is rated at 24 carats (99.99% pure), is far too soft to use as coinage. Traces of other harder metals, such as copper, silver, nickel, tin, or platinum are added to gold to create mixtures (alloys) that make coins less susceptible to wear and extend their life in circulation. |
