Historical Notes | As credited on the obverse of this five-dollar coin, this piece was also struck by “A[ugustus] BECHTLER.” While Augustus’s father was widely respected and noted in his day for his skills in making coins, neither Augustus nor his cousin, Christopher, Jr., received the recognition they were due for their own craftsmanship. In fact, in an effort to determine the true gold content on Bechtler coinage, nuclear activation tests were performed on scores of Bechtler pieces at North Carolina State University in 1976. Those tests revealed that the coins produced by both Augustus and Christopher, Jr., were generally more consistent in their weights and fineness than the earlier gold pieces minted by Christopher, Sr., or struck under his supervision. |
