Historical Notes | After the discovery of gold in California in 1848, mining operations declined but did not end in North Carolina. In the 1850s, in fact, there was a revival of gold-mining activity in the Tar Heel State as engineers applied more efficient technologies to locate and retrieve the metal. Deeper mining shafts were excavated, and high-pressure hydraulic hoses were used to carve out the terrain in order to uncover deposits and veins of gold. The Bechtler Mint itself continued to operate into this period but at a greatly reduced capacity. While under the supervision of Christopher Bechtler, Jr., the nephew of Christopher, Sr., the Rutherford County business finally closed its doors in 1857, although the striking of the very last coins there occurred earlier, probably around 1852. |
