Historical Notes | Both chartered by the state legislature on the same day in 1804, the Bank of Cape Fear and the Bank of New Bern were the first banks founded in North Carolina. Depictions of George Washington and the Roman goddesses Ceres and Ops are found in the designs of many bank notes from this period. Ceres, representing agriculture (especially wheat and other grains), is usually depicted holding a sickle and carrying a sheaf or a few stalks of wheat. Ops is invariably accompanied by a popular Roman symbol for plenty and fertilit ;, the horn-shaped cornucopia filled with fruit, vegetables, and flowing plants. |
