Project description | Interviews, 2007-ongoing, focus on issues related to Latin American immigration to North Carolina and the formation of Latino communities. Interviewers are conducted by undergraduate students in courses taught by Hannah Gill at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interviewees include immigrants, United States-born second generations, professionals who work with immigrants, policy-makers, religious leaders, educators, students, and local business owners. |

Abstract | Luzma Henao is a second grade teaching assistant who arrived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1998. She is originally from Colombia, Medellín where she worked for the University of Antioquia. Luzma discusses her motivations for moving to the United States, her experiences working for thirteen years in the Carrboro-Chapel Hill school system, the changing attitudes towards Spanish teaching programs, and her perceptions on the community and the integration of cultures. She notes the misconceptions people have about her place of origin, for example the question of whether washing machines are used in her native country. She ends by talking about her family and the careers her children have achieved in this country. |
