Abstract | Matthew McClanahan, inspired by mother who is a first-generation college graduate, is an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His family on his mother’s side is all from Jalisco, Mexico but much of his family now resides in California. Growing up in California, Matt was surrounded by Hispanic culture, tradition, and language. His large extended family embraced this culture and had their own special traditions as well. However he moved to North Carolina in the 7th grade and was surprised to find that the culture he was accustomed to was not as prevalent. McClanahan's family still practices many of the traditions he grew up with and he is excited to see a growing Hispanic influence in North Carolina. He compares his experience as a Latino in public school systems in California with that of North Carolina. |
