Project description | Interviews, 2007-ongoing, focus on issues related to Latin American immigration to North Carolina and the formation of Latino communities. Interviewers are conducted by undergraduate students in courses taught by Hannah Gill at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interviewees include immigrants, United States-born second generations, professionals who work with immigrants, policy-makers, religious leaders, educators, students, and local business owners. |

Abstract | Miguel is an undergraduate student at a four year university in another state, majoring in Computer Science and Spanish. He and his family are originally from Guatemala and live in a small rural town in North Carolina. Miguel moved to the United States when he was twelve years old and attended school in North Carolina. In this interview he discusses his high school experiences and the problems he faced applying for colleges. He also talks about the struggles he faces as an undocumented student, but thinks this is something he can overcome. In closing, Miguel talks about the Dream Act and his hopes that one day it, or something like it, can be passed so the lives of undocumented students like him can improve. |
