Project description | Interviews, 1995-1997, aimed at understanding how North Carolinians have dealt with post-Great Depression changes. Overarching themes are the realignment in North Carolina party politics and the Republican reemergence, the evolution of African American political activity since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the evolution of women's political activity since the 1960s, and the centrality of cultural and social politics in the state's political contests and debates. |

Abstract | Jackson “Jack” Lee, a long-serving Republican politician and activist, begins the interview by giving his biographical history and early involvement in party politics. He discusses his efforts to build Republican support on the local (Fayetteville) and state levels; his losing campaigns for the House and Senate in the 1960s; his relations with Jim Gardner, Jesse Helms, Tom Ellis and the Congressional Club; his service as North Carolina Republican Party Chair from 1977-1981; and the political realignment of the state from the 1970s onwards. |
