Abstract | James M. Baley, Jr., was a significant figure in the North Carolina Republican Party from the mid-1930s (when he was first elected to the House) through to the 1970s. He first describes his background, his decision to support the Republican Party and run for office, and his first few years in the state legislature. Baley then discusses his election as Chair of the Republican Party in 1950; his support of Eisenhower in 1952; his retirement from electoral politics in 1961; and his views on the demise of one-party politics in North Carolina and the elimination of the old Democratic stranglehold. |
