. The
inscriptions
on the
four
sides
,
read
as
follows
, "Here was
fought
the
Battle
of
Alamance
,
May
16th
,
1771
between
the
British
and the
Regulators
"
--
"
Liberty
"
--
"
First
Battle
of the
Revolution
"
--
"
1880.
" The
British
numbered
1100
, their
killed
and
wounded
81
.
Regulators
,
2,000
, their
total
loss
about
200
. The
former
were
commanded
by
Gov
.
Tryon
,
whose
order
was not at
first
obeyed
,
when
he in
great
anger
repeated
"
Fire--
fire
on them or
fire
on
me.
" The
Battle
lasted
two
hours
. The
Regulators
being
poorly
armed
and
short
of
ammunition
,
could
not
successfully
cope
with
Tryon's
forces
and
soon
took
to
tree
fighting
and
later
dispersed
to
escape
capture
and
execution
,
which
fate
,
however
,
overtook
several
of the
leaders
and
others
.
Referring
to
Wheeler's
History
of
North
Carolina
, the
conclusion
of his
version
,
reads
as
follows
, "Here was the
first
blood
spilled
in the
United
States
in
resistance
to
executions
of
English
rulers
and
oppressions
by the
English
government
. Had this
battle
terminated
differently
(and
five
years
afterwards
such
would have been the
case)
, the
banks
of
Alamance
would be
venerated
as
another
Bunker
Hill
and
Husbands
,
Merrill
, and
others
ranked
as
Warrens
and
patriots
of
another
day
.
