Abstract	Printed with manuscript annotations. This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey under the direction of Frank Manly Thorn (1836-1889) as superintendent from surveys conducted between 1852 and 1887. This is the 1888 edition with corrections to 1893 of a map first published in 1856. The dredged channels in the river were drawn from surveys executed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the direction of Captain William Herbert Bixby in 1886 and 1887. As the title indicates, the map portrays the Cape Fear River from Reeves Point north to Wilmington. Soundings are given, and the ship channel is marked. Information pertaining to buoys, beacons, soundings, tides and abbreviations used to describe the composition of the river bottom is found in text appearing in the left margin of the map. Inland detail includes cities and towns, roads, railroads, forts, houses, lighthouses, hospital and ruins of Old Brunswick, and Phosphate Works.
