Abstract	Color print. This map was prepared by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey under the supervision of Leo Otis Colbert (1883-1968) as director. This is the 1940 edition of the map with corrections to 1943. It is based on a survey and map of the sound and straits first published in 1864. The map portrays Core Sound and Strait, Back Sound, and Beaufort Inlet. The northeastern end of the sound appears as an inset ("Continuation to Harbor I. Bar, Pamlico Sound") in the upper right of the map. Soundings are given for all of the waterways depicted and information relating to weather signal stations, buoys, tides, channels, and abbreviations is found in text appearing at the top of the map above the neat line. Includes cautions and notes on radiobeacon signals, heights, authorities, and storm warnings. Inland detail includes cities and towns, landmarks along waterways, railroads, roads, lighthouses, houses, and Fort Macon.
