Abstract	Print. This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey acting under orders of Acting Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee, U.S. Navy, as commander of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Triangulation and topography surveys were executed by Richard E. Halter and hydrography by J. S. Bradford. This copy is a later edition with corrections to 1902 of a map first published in 1864. It portrays the Roanoke River and its two other branches, the Middle River and the Eastmost River, at their entrance to Batchelor Bay at the head of Albemarle Sound. Soundings are given for the river and the bay, and the depth of the water and contour of the bottom are indicated by hachures. Information relating to the soundings, tides, and the Roanoke River Lighthouse is found in text in the lower right corner of the map.
