Abstract	Printed. This map portrays Croatan and Roanoke sounds and the northern tip of Roanoke Island and shows the location of a proposed ship channel through Roanoke Sound and across Bodie Island to the Atlantic. Soundings are given for both Croatan and Roanoke sounds, and the composition of the bottom is noted. Oriented with north to the lower right. Includes "Scale of the rise and fall of the water caused by the winds in Roanoke and Croatan Sounds N.C." and "Profile through the Channel in Roanoke Sound and across the Sands between it and the Ocean."
Historical Note	This map was prepared by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in compliance with an Act of Congress passed in 1826 authorizing a survey of Roanoke Inlet and Sound to determine the feasibility of reopening the inlet and making a permanent ship channel between Albemarle Sound and the Atlantic. The map was submitted as part of the report to Congress in 1829 and published in A Collection of Maps, etc., Published by Order of Congress (Washington, 1843).
