Abstract	This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey under the direction of Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) as superintendent of the survey and printed by P. S. Duval & Co. of Philadelphia. It is a preliminary work showing the progress of the coast survey in section IV from Cape Henry, Virginia, to Cape Fear, North Carolina, during the period from 1845 to 1854. This map portrays coastal Virginia and North Carolina from Cape Henry to Bogue Inlet. Triangulation lines are shown, and the areas portrayed on individual topographical and hydrographical sheets are delineated and the year surveyed is noted. Explanatory notes regarding the abbreviations used on the map are found at the bottom center of the map.
