Abstract	This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey as one in the series of numbered charts depicting the Atlantic coast of the United States and issued in November 1879 by Carlile Pollock Patterson (1816-1881) as superintendent. This copy is an 1894 reprint. Triangulation was executed by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) as superintendent, William M. Boyce, A. A. Humphreys, J. J. S. Hassler, Richard E. Halter, J. Hewston, and George A. Fairfield between 1848 and 1879. Topography was executed by Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow and J. J. S. Hassler between 1848 and 1851; and hydrography was surveyed by Robert Platt between 1868 and 1870. Off shore soundings were performed by Thornton A. Jenkins and Alexander Murray between 1849 and 1859. Astronomical and magnetic observations were made by Charles Otis Boutelle in 1846 and 1847. The reduced drawing of topography and hydrography was made by Adolph Lindenkohl, and the map was engraved by Alexander Sengteller, W. A. Thompson, and A. Petersen. The map portrays the coast of North Carolina from Currituck Beach to Oregon Inlet. Off shore soundings are given, and the depth of the water is also indicated by dotted lines. Topographical features, roads, locations of structures, and other landmarks are shown. Information relating to tides, lighthouses, soundings, and the abbreviations used to describe the ocean bottom is found in the upper and lower right corners of the map.
