Abstract	This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey as one in the series of numbered charts depicting the Atlantic coast of the United States. It was issued in June 1888 (with updates to July 1889) by Frank Manly Thorn (1836 - ) as superintendent of the coast survey. Triangulation was executed by C. P. Bolles, A. S. Wadsworth, Charles T. Iardella, and W. C. Hodgkins between 1850 and 1886; topography by H. L. Whiting, A. S. Wadsworth, W. H. Dennis, A. W. Longfellow, I. H. Adams, C. M. Bache, and Charles T. Iardella between 1851 and 1873; and hydrography by J. N. Maffit, C. R. P. Rodgers, J. M Grimes, J. F. Moser, R. Platt, and W. Irving Vinal between 1854 and 1880. Astronomical and magnetic observations were made by W. C. Hodgkins and J. B. Baylor. The reduced drawing was done by C. Junken and Henry Lindenkohl; and the map was engraved by Jos. Enthoffer, E. A. Maedell, A. Petersen, H. M. Knight, and H. C. Evans. The map portrays the coastline of North Carolina from Core Sound near Horse Island to Bogue Inlet. Topographical features, roads, locations of structures, and other landmarks are shown. Also shows the location of lighthouses, life saving stations, and a line of the Atlantic and North Carolina Rail Road. Soundings are given, and the depth of the water is also indicated by shading. Information relating to the soundings, aids to navigation, tides, and other aspects of the map is found in upper left corner. Oriented with north to the upper right.
