Description	One-dollar note issued by the Bank of Fayetteville on November 8, 1855; engraved and printed by Baldwin, Adams and Company, New York, N.Y.; black and red inks with black “ONE” at top-left corner and running vertically along right end, very large numeral “1” off-center left with large red “ONE” overprint on lower third of note; robed female figure decorating left end is Libertas (Lady Liberty) holding in her right hand a staff with a Phrygian cap (pileus in Latin) and resting left hand on Union (United States) shield; vignette at upper right of flying female figure who combines symbols associated with both the Roman goddesses of agriculture, Ceres (grain), and the goddess of plenty, Ops (cornucopia), in the background are three ships in full sail; printed plate letter “A” to right of center vignette, handwritten serial number “838” to left of center vignette, handwritten issue date “8 Nov. [18]55” in bottom-third of note above the signature of the Bank of Fayetteville’s president, John Duncan Starr, and to left is signature of bank’s cashier, William D. Broadfoot.
Transcription	ONE NORTH CAROLINA A THE BANK OF FAYETTEVILLE Will pay ONE Dollar on demand to or bearer at the Banking House in FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Cashr. Prest.
Historical Notes	The left end of this note includes a popular image found on nineteenth-century American currencies: the goddess Libertas (Lady Liberty), who holds a Union shield and a pole on top of which is perched a Phrygian cap. Former slaves in the Roman Empire once wore such a conical cap as public evidence that they were free subjects and had been officially emancipated by their masters. Many centuries later, during both the American and French revolutions, the red Phrygian cap became a much-used symbol for liberty.
