The
left

of this
note
includes
a
popular
image
found
on
nineteenth-century
American
currencies
: the
goddess
Libertas
(Lady
Liberty)
,
who
holds
a
Union
shield
and a
pole
on
top
of
which
is
perched
a
Phrygian
cap
.
Former
slaves
in the
Roman
Empire
once
wore
such
a
conical
cap
as
public
evidence
that they were
free
subjects
and had been
officially
emancipated
by their
masters
.
Many
centuries
later
,
during
both
the
American
and
French
revolutions
, the
red
Phrygian
cap
became
a
much-used
symbol
for
liberty
.
