Notes |
Daniel Lindsay Russell, Jr. (1845-1908) was the son of a prominent planter in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Russell attended the University of North Carolina, but joined the Confederate Army as an officer at the commencement of the Civil War despite his Unionist tendencies. Russell was elected to the North Carolina legislature from 1864 to 1866. After the war Russell joined the Republican Party. He served as a NC Superior Court judge from 1868 to 1874. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives for one term in 1879. In 1896 Russell was elected as the Republican Governor of North Carolina. In 1899 the North Carolina Democratic Party took control of the state legislature, and passed an amendment that disenfranchised poor white and African American voters. Consequently, Russell did not run for re-election in 1901. He was the last Republican Governor of North Carolina until 1972. This button was not a campaign item; it was from a series included as a premium with candy or tobacco. |
