Notes |
Dr. Reginald A. Hawkins (1924-2007) was North Carolina's first African American candidate for governor since Reconstruction. A dentist and an ordained Presbyterian minister in Charlotte, Hawkins was fearlessly outspoken against racial discrimination. He established a voting rights organization and organized demonstrations that led to the integration of local businesses. Hawkins campaigned unsuccessfully for governor in 1968 and 1972. On the day that he was murdered in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King had originally been scheduled to visit North Carolina to support Hawkins' gubernatorial campaign. |
