Description
Plaster bust of Governor Zebulon Vance , painted bronze in color , 1899 . The bust was presented to UNC by the class of 1899 . The bust depicts an older Vance with a moustache . The base is inscribed "Vance " at top center and "Class of 1899 Gift " at bottom center . Dimensions : 27 5/8 " x 12 1/2 " x 12 1/2 ".

Notes
Zebulon Vance (1830-1894) was a prominent North Carolina governor and United States Senator . After studying law at UNC in 1851 , Vance served briefly in the U.S . Congress until entering the Confederacy as a regimental colonel at the start of the Civil War . In 1862 , Vance was elected governor of North Carolina , where his efforts to protect the individual rights of NC citizens while supplying great numbers of troops to the Confederacy earned him the title “War Governor of the South.” Vance later served as U.S . Senator until his death in 1894 .
