Mother Vineyard , about a half mile south of Fort Raleigh , is believed to be the oldest cultivated scuppernong grapevine in America . The celebrated vineyard , covering nearly an acre , is mentioned in early reports of the colonists who selected the site for a settlement . Back in 1854 , Captain Barlowe wrote , "Roanoke Island is full of grapes.. . the very beating of the sea overflows with them. "
