Parish organized in 1821 . Bishop Ravenscroft , first Bishop of North Carolina , was for the first five years of his Bishopric also the first rector of Parish . His remains under chancel of the church . Present church built in 1849 . Designed by Richard M . Upjohn , noted English architect , who designed Trinity Church , head of Wall St. , New York . Christ Church said to be the finest specimen of Gothic architecture in the South . Parish has had but three rectors during past ninety years .
