Drawing of a foot with tar on the heel , honoring North Carolina's soldiers in the Civil War . The front of the card reads , "1861-1865 , the Tar Heels Roll of Honor . North Carolina , with a male population (military age) of 115,000 furnished 127,000 Confederate Soldiers Lost 40,735 of her brave sons , double the loss of any other state with 5,000 to spare . First at Bethel , Foremost at Gettysburg , the last at Appomattox . 'God Bless North Carolina ' [signed] R.E . Lee. " The bottom of the card includes the state toast , "Here's the the land of the Long Leaf Pine , The Summer land where the Sun doth Shine , Where the Weat grow Strong and the Strong grow Great , Here's to North Carolina , the good Old Tar Heel State. "
