Smith-McDowell House on the campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute at 283 Victoria Road (formerly the Buncombe Turnpike). Restored as a heritage center by the Western North Carolina Historical Association. Built in 1840 by James A. Smith, first child of white parentage born west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Later home of Major William W. McDowell, noted fo rhis efforts in the War Between the States. |
