Caption |
The story is told that in the early days, an old nag with a lantern dangling from its neck would be led to and fro across the high sand dunes. Ships at sea, mistaking the swaying lantern for a ship riding at anchor in a safe harbor would attempt to come in thereby running themselves aground on the treacherous shoals of the Dare Coast and subsequently became easy prey for the land Pirates of Nags Head. |
