Abstract	Hand colored print. Shows rivers, Native American settlements, and mountains. Covers from what is roughly modern-day North Carolina south to Mexico. Shows the Bahamas off the coast of Florida.
Historical Note	This map was drawn by Geronimo de Chaves (c.1523-1574), a Royal Cosmographer to Philip II of Spain, for publication in Abraham Orelius' (1527-1598) atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map first appeared in the 1584 Latin edition of the atlas and the unaltered plate appeared in all subsequent editions until 1612. This is one of the most important early maps of Southeastern America. It reflects names of Native American towns and other details of the interior, probably obtained from reports of the Hernando DeSoto expedition.
